Joe Keeney is the founder and Chairman of 4th Sector Solutions, School Food Solutions L3C, and of 4th Sector Transportation LLC. He has 20+ years of experience serving the national charter school community. From 1997-2005 Joe was with Edison Learning, where he served as President of Edison Charter Schools. While at Edison, he helped build the nation’s largest and highest achieving network of public charter schools at the time, serving approximately 30,000 students in 14 states and DC. His responsibilities included client and new school development, school finance and operations, and real estate design and construction. Prior to Edison, Joe had been a divisional president and chief operating officer of a Fortune 1000 global manufacturer (including five years in Hong Kong), and a corporate strategy consultant at LEK Consulting Inc. in London and Boston. Joe has a BA in economics from Columbia College and an MBA with high distinction from Harvard Business School, where he was elected a Baker Scholar (top 5% of class) and received the Macy Scholarship and the Uhlmann Award. He also earned an EdM in education leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University, and served as a mentor in the Leadership for Educational Entrepreneurship program at Arizona State University. Joe is the author of several articles and book chapters for American Enterprise Institute publications, as well as several articles on facility financing and on building a high performing back office. In 2010, he was selected by the U.S. Department of Education to serve as a peer reviewer in the $4.35 billion Race to the Top grant competition. Joe serves on the board of Charter Schools Development Corporation, a Community Development Financial Institution. Joe has played rugby for Columbia, Harvard, the Charles River Rats and the Kowloon RFC, and he is an Ironman triathlete.
